2020 ARCTIC FRONTIERS: THE COPERNICUS MARINE SERVICE SIDE-EVENT

January 28 2020

The Copernicus Marine Service side event entitled “The Copernicus marine service: extracting value from satellite Earth Observation data” will take place at Clarion Hotel The Edge and Quality Hotel Saga (2 minutes walk from the main venue) on Tuesday 28 January 2020, from 17.00 to 19.00. It is co-organized by the Nansen Center (Bergen, Norway) together with Met Norway (Oslo, Norway), Mercator Ocean International (Toulouse, France), Havforskningsinstituttet (Bergen, Norway) and the Norsk Polar Institutt (Tromsø, Norway).

The side event will first introduce the Copernicus Marine Service portfolio which holds the largest source of multidisciplinary environmental data covering the whole Arctic including observation based and model based sea ice, waves, ocean currents and biogeochemical data. By providing free data and access to a qualified service desk, the user-driven Copernicus marine service is geared to support innovation in the Arctic.

Then a description of the user value chain will be illustrated with the Copernicus Marine core products used by the European countries such as Norway which have the responsibility to monitor the marine environment. Making the most reliable Arctic data and the underlying expertise available is an essential mission of Copernicus for the benefit of national and EU directives such as its Arctic policy.

Finally, the side event will provide fresh news from the Arctic data providers and open the floor for suggestions towards the necessary future evolutions of the service.
