Building a global observing system for marine debris: the IMDOS initiative
The marine pollution problem may have only started in the 1950s, but it is already impacting every part of our ocean. Now, by harmonizing data, standardizing monitoring methods, leveraging technology, and harnessing the power of a global community, the newly created Integrated Marine Debris Observing System aims to support and strengthen marine debris research.

Using Earth observations to help address challenges in small island nations
Sitting at the forefront of climate change impacts, developing coastal resilience and adaptation plans is essential for small island nations. Good plans need good data, which is why the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) is working with small island stakeholders to harness Earth Observations for early warning systems, monitoring systems, and more.

Ocean observation and prediction to support coastal sustainability and resilience
The GEO Blue Planet workshop on ocean observation and prediction to address coastal sustainability in Africa took place online on 6 June 2023. The 3-hour workshop brought together 44 participants from 14 countries, representing UN bodies, regional organisations, coastal stakeholders, and practitioners and national groups working on coastal monitoring and management.
